Stove selection is more than picking a model. Output (measured in BTUs and area heated) must match the home's square footage, insulation level, and zoning. A 1,500-square-foot Beltsville rancher needs a different stove than a 3,500-square-foot Frederick farmhouse. For homes with an existing masonry chimney, we line the chimney with a UL 1777 listed 304 or 316Ti stainless steel liner sized to the stove manufacturer's spec, since the original masonry flue is almost always oversized for a modern high-efficiency stove. Insulating the liner is required by most manufacturers to maintain proper draft and prevent condensation. Hearth construction follows manufacturer clearance-to-combustible specifications and NFPA 211 minimum hearth dimensions.

Maryland permitting varies by jurisdiction. Most counties require a building permit for wood stove installation; some additionally require a separate mechanical permit. Howard, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, and Frederick Counties have generally consistent permit processes, while Prince George's, Charles, and St. Mary's may have additional requirements depending on whether the home is in an unincorporated or municipal jurisdiction. After installation we register the manufacturer warranty in the homeowner's name, train the owner on proper operation (loading technique, burn rate, secondary combustion engagement, ash management), and schedule the first annual chimney sweep at the right interval for the appliance.
