About Our Gas Conversion Service

Converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas is the single most popular fireplace upgrade in Maryland today, and for good reason. A wood fireplace requires firewood, kindling, ash management, sweeps, and inspections — and most of the heat goes up the chimney rather than into the room. A modern direct-vent gas insert produces eight to ten times the usable heat of an open wood fire, lights with a remote control or wall switch, runs through a power outage with battery backup, and requires only annual inspection rather than sweeping. Eagle Chimney Service performs hundreds of wood-to-gas conversions every year across Maryland and DC, with code-compliant venting, licensed gas line connection, and Maryland permit coordination on every job.

There are three primary conversion paths, and the right one depends on what the homeowner wants. A direct-vent gas insert is the standard for serious heating: a sealed-combustion appliance with glass front, slipped inside the existing masonry fireplace, vented through a coaxial flue (intake air drawn from outside, exhaust gases vented out). Efficiency ratings of 70-85 percent mean the appliance can heat the room and beyond, and direct-vent units do not require an open damper, eliminating the conditioned-air loss that plagues open fireplaces. Vermont Castings, Heat-N-Glo, Mendota, Regency, Napoleon, and Valor all make excellent direct-vent inserts at price points from $3,500 to $8,500 installed. A vented gas log set is the second path: ceramic logs and a burner placed inside an open masonry fireplace with the damper open, producing realistic flames but most heat going up the chimney. Vented gas logs are popular as ambience and for homeowners who do not want to give up the open fireplace look — installed cost typically $1,800 to $3,500. The third path, ventless gas logs, is allowed in some Maryland jurisdictions but we generally do not recommend them due to indoor air quality concerns and the requirement that a window be open during operation.

The most critical engineering decision in a wood-to-gas conversion is the chimney liner. The original wood-flue masonry chimney is almost always oversized for the gas appliance — sometimes by a factor of three or four times. An oversized flue with gas combustion causes serious problems: combustion gases cool too quickly inside the chimney, condense into liquid water containing sulfuric and nitric acid, and that acidic condensate destroys the masonry, the smoke chamber parging, and any existing clay tiles from the inside. Within ten years an unlined wood-to-gas conversion can ruin a chimney that would otherwise have lasted another fifty years. We size and install a UL 1777 listed 304 or 316Ti stainless steel liner properly matched to the gas appliance Btu output and chimney height, eliminating the condensation problem and providing a thirty-year-plus liner life.

Gas line connection is performed by a licensed Maryland gas plumber on every job. We coordinate scheduling and inspection so the gas line, chimney work, and appliance installation are all completed and inspected together. Maryland permitting typically requires a building permit plus a mechanical permit for the appliance and a gas permit for the line work — we coordinate all three. After installation, the appliance is started, leak-tested, draft-verified, and the homeowner is trained on remote, wall switch, and battery backup operation. The first annual gas appliance inspection is included with installation. Warranties — typically lifetime on the firebox, 5-10 years on burners and pilots — are registered in the homeowner's name.
