Chimney Repair in Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier is a small, walkable Prince George's County city just over the DC line, anchored by the 34th Street historic district and the Glut Food Co-op, and one of the cornerstones of the Gateway Arts District. The town developed at the turn of the 20th century as a streetcar suburb, and the original housing stock — Victorians, Queen Annes, Foursquares, and Craftsman bungalows from the 1900s through the 1930s — has been carefully preserved across most of the Mount Rainier Historic District. That preservation comes with chimney consequences. Almost every Mount Rainier chimney is original to the home — soft-brick single-flue stacks built with lime mortar, set on undersized footings, capped with mortar washes that disappeared in the 1980s. A typical Mount Rainier job is matched-brick replacement above the roofline, full lime-mortar repointing, a poured concrete crown to replace the original wash, and a custom-fit lifetime stainless cap sized for the odd dimensions of the original flue. Most of these chimneys also need 316Ti stainless relining for whatever modern appliance — almost always a high-efficiency gas insert — replaced the original wood firebox.
